Should You Buy a House on a Busy Street?

If you're like many people, you browse real estate listings and nod your head when you read about a home that's located "on a quiet street." But is living on a busy street all that bad?

Here's what you need to know.

Should You Buy a House on a Busy Street?

It might not be all-bad to buy a house on what people call a busy street. Sure, you don't want headlights shining into your living room (or worse, your bedroom) all night long - but there are some perks to living on or near a busy thoroughfare:

  • You'll have easy access to attractions, the freeway and other places you go frequently
  • You'll most likely be closer to work, the grocery store and other hotspots, too
  • Houses on busy streets might be cheaper than those way back on the tail end of neighborhoods

With all that said, though, there are some drawbacks:

  • Busy streets aren't places where kids can play like they could on a cul-de-sac in the back of a neighborhood
  • You'll hear traffic, horns and other noises at all times of day (and, in many cases, at night)
  • You might have a tough time finding a buyer when you want to sell - there are people who won't even look at homes that are located on busy streets

The bottom line, though, is that you should find a house that makes you happy. Tell your real estate agent what you're looking for and see what comes up. You may find that the way a home is designed or its location outweighs the fact that it's on a busy street.
